Welcome to Closer,

A weekly experiment in AI interpretation: I share a photo, ask AI to describe it, then generate an image from that description. This is edition #016. Prompts are in grey boxes. Descriptions are in italics.

Chat gave me six different Prompt Styles and we're trying them all on the same image over the upcoming weeks. The first week was hilariously bad, last week was uneventful. Is this week different?

Emotional and Symbolic Interpretation

1. Companionship Beyond Species

At the heart of the image is the intimate, wordless bond between humans and dogs. The man is not just swimming — he’s supporting his dog with care, like a parent holding a child learning to float. The dog's relaxed posture suggests complete trust. The second dog hovers protectively, forming a triangle of connection, comfort, and play.

Symbolism:
This could symbolize the deep-seated human need for loyalty and unconditional love, often found in animals. It also reflects the idea that freedom — like floating in open water — feels safest when shared with those you trust.

2. Escape and Simplicity

The boat in the background represents modern freedom — the ability to drift away from the structured world and drop anchor in solitude. Yet the man has left the vessel for the water. He isn’t seeking control or speed, but immersion.

Symbolism:
A subtle rejection of control and complexity in favor of surrender and simplicity. It suggests that true freedom isn't found in the tools we use to escape, but in the moments we slow down and connect — to nature, to others, to ourselves.

3. Patriotism in Stillness

The American flag is present, yet not overpowering. It flaps quietly in the breeze, overseeing a scene of peace and unity rather than action or dominance.

Symbolism:
It may suggest a version of national pride rooted in leisure, peace, and the personal freedom to experience joy. Not the loud, performative patriotism, but a quiet appreciation of having space to breathe.

Mood and Atmosphere

The photo breathes calm — the smooth texture of the sea, the pastel sky, the absence of movement or noise. The man’s laugh isn’t heard, but felt, and the dogs’ stillness adds a layer of trust and grounding.

It feels like the world has been reduced to the essentials: water, sky, love, and time.

What Is This Image Trying to Say?

"Be here. With them. In this moment."

It’s a soft manifesto against haste — a visual argument for presence. It reminds us that the richest experiences are often the quietest ones, where nothing happens except the sun on your skin and a dog leaning into your arms, weightless and at peace.

Impressions

Well... uneventful is how I would describe the results again, so far.

I want to finish this 6-week prompt-trial using the same image to see if there's any surprises in there, and I do have some other things I'd like to try after that, but a small part of me is considering to hit pause on the weekly updates for now. At least until there's been some sort of considerable update to the general capabilities of AI.

I still believe it's been fun to see the results we've been getting so far, while playing around with the approach to see how much that matters. But one of the overarching goals of this weekly "Human vs. AI " experiment was to determine the impact AI has on human creators. In my opening essay I wrote:

The goal is to investigate the differences between human and AI generated images. We can probably agree that AI currently is capable of producing relatively nice images out of the box, but it's not able to replicate human emotion and observation. Though, perhaps as the newsletter progresses over time, the gap becomes increasingly smaller and smaller. Seeing how quickly AI-generated images have improved these past few years makes me wish I started this idea a couple of years ago.

Now that this week's prompt has specifically asked about the emotions and symbolism surrounding the image and then providing completely irrelevant and useless notes with regards to trying to replicate an image, I wonder: is the gap indeed becoming smaller and smaller?

I mean, if you give ChatGPT an image it's clearly able to come up with a story that makes some kind of sense. It's able to mimic emotional understanding. But it's not able to translate that so-called emotion into an image that has any more significant meaning beyond what you'd get when prompting more clinically. I also think that won't change much until, say, GPT 5.0 or something alike drops.

I feel like this experiment still makes sense but perhaps it makes more sense over greater periods of time when AI-advancements have had some chance to improve to the point that you'd notice the improvements. I think it's good we've given it a few weeks to gather data on the capabilities of AI image generation in 2025 but, maybe, those datapoints should just 'sit there' for a while until some proper advancements have been made. If that happens, we revive the newsletter and pick up where we left things.

I'm not sure right now. We will definitely continue for a little longer but I think hitting pause when these weekly drops become repetitive is sensible too. The last thing I want to do is continue sharing the same results and impressions over and over again, effectively boring y'all to unsubscription. Instead, I much prefer keeping this project latently around while the AI overlords are working on the next grand iteration. When (if?) that happens, we simply reconnect then. Damn, now I really wish we started this when AI image generation was first introduced a few years ago. It would've made another great datapoint over time, considering how far we've come since.

But that's all a worry for later. For now, we have at least three more weeks of this six-week detour and then some fun ideas in the pipeline with the current AI-capabilities (of which some are ideas by readers, thank you for your contributions!) Let's focus on those and then revisit these thoughts.
